PTD Module & Integration Device Yield Engineer - 732752 
Description
PTD Module Engineers are responsible for leading scientific research and enabling manufacture of innovative device architectures coupled with the realization of these architectures. Responsibilities include designing, executing and analyzing experiments necessary to meet engineering specifications for their process. A Module Engineer participates in the development of intellectual property and the development of the equipment necessary to exploit understanding gained in research (in collaboration with equipment suppliers.) The Engineer must work effectively with the equipment supplier to identify shortcomings, propose and evaluate hardware modification to mitigate issues and operate the manufacturing line in order to integrate the many individual steps necessary for the manufacture of complex microprocessors. Module Engineers are also responsible for overseeing in-situ ramp to manufacturing volumes to demonstrate that the technology meets requirements while simultaneously transferring the technology to counterparts in manufacturing via 'Copy Exactly!' methodology. Module ownership includes the install and qualification of manufacturing capacity at the development site and audit installation/qualification and supervision of first full loop at the production site. Must hold a PhD. 

Qualifications

You must possess a minimum of a Ph.D. degree majoring in Physics, Material Science, Chemical Engineering, Electrical Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, or Chemistry.

PhD candidates should meet the additional following criteria:

- Demonstrated experience in keen experimental insight and ability to devise and focus on key experiments
- Excellent written and verbal communication skills
- Highly motivated and excited by self-directed hands-on work
- Creative and flexible to thrive under changing priorities
- Teamwork skills
- Familiarity or expertise with semiconductor processing is a plus but not necessary
- Minimum GPA = 3.5/4.0 for undergraduate and graduate education

CDC Fellowship Opportunities

The Protein Biomarker-Lipid Reference Laboratory at the National Center for Environmental Health, CDC is performing research in the areas of human biomonitoring and chronic diseases. This research involves the development of analytical methods to measure biomarkers such as steroid hormones, lipids, hemoglobin adducts, and trans-fatty acids, which have been associated with chronic disease, such as cancer and cardiovascular disease. Information obtained from this research will be used to determine the level of exposure in the population and to determine normal ranges for chronic disease biomarkers. This information will be used to help to identify population subgroups potentially at risk as a result of exposure, to evaluate public health activities, and to better diagnose diseases.

The research involves activities such as sample preparation using automated equipment, analysis of samples by mass spectrometry, data processing and analysis, and presentation of results. The candidate will perform these tasks in compliance with CDC and CLIA policies and regulations, which requires record keeping activities and performing administrative tasks.

This fellowship will provide the opportunity to obtain hands-on experience in human exposure research as well as laboratory medicine, using state-of-the-art laboratory equipment and procedures, working in a CLIA regulated environment, and in biomonitoring related public health activities.


We are seeking candidates at the Ph.D., M.S., and B.S. levels with a degree in science (Minimum GPA: 3.0) and experience in chemical and analytical laboratory work.

At the Doctoral level, the following skills are desired:
• The ability to conceive, organize and carry out applied research directed towards expanding scientific knowledge and understanding of human measurements of lipids and/or chemistry principles associated with clinical measurements.
• The aptitude to review scientific literature, formulate research plans, conduct laboratory experiments, interpret and evaluate results and other findings, and write reports describing the results and conclusions.
• The ability to interact with professional and technical laboratory personnel detailed to assist in accomplishing specifically designated program activities.
• Experience with HPLC, GC, and MS instrumentation is required.

At the Master’s level, the following skills are desired:
• The ability to organize and carry out applied research directed towards expanding scientific knowledge and understanding of human measurements of lipids and/or chemistry principles associated with clinical measurement.
• The aptitude to review scientific literature, formulate research plans, conduct laboratory experiments, interpret and evaluate results and other findings, and write reports describing the results and conclusions.
• Experience with HPLC, GC, and MS instrumentation is required.

At the Bachelor’s level, the following skills are desired:
• Experience conducting routine laboratory tasks.
• HPLC, GC, and MS instrumentation experience.
• Proficiency in Microsoft Office applications.

The initial appointment is for one year, but may be renewed for up to four year. The participant will receive a monthly stipend depending on educational level and experience and following the federal salary tables (GS tables). Postdoctoral positions available at NREL in polymer chemistry and engineering

We have two positions in polymer chemistry and engineering available immediately in our research groups, which we were hoping that you could forward to graduate students and postdocs in your department or research group.

Both positions will be an integral part of a large, multidisciplinary team to produce renewable polymers from biomass-derived monomers. Interested candidates should send a CV and letter describing their research and professional interests via email to Gregg Beckham (for the polymer engineering position) or to Mark Nimlos (for the polymer chemistry position).

Polymer Chemist: We are seeking candidates for a post-doctoral researcher position to develop renewable polymers and composites from chemical products made from biomass. Unique monomers will be produced by biochemical and thermochemical conversion technologies and this new hire will be responsible for identifying and demonstrating synthetic routes to novel polymers that are of commercial interest. The researcher will work with a team of scientists and engineers to develop, optimize and scale up processes and will also work with industrial partners to insure commercial development.

A Ph.D. in Polymer Chemistry with a strong emphasis on organic synthesis is required for this position. A familiarity with biomass and the chemistry of biomass conversion is desired.

Polymer Engineer: We are seeking additional candidates for a post-doctoral researcher position as part of the same project with an emphasis on polymer engineering. This new hire will be responsible for the design of new polymeric materials using the aforementioned monomers, testing of their physicochemical properties, and the implementation of new approaches for the design of novel polymer blends.

A Ph.D. in Materials Science and Engineering, Chemical Engineering, Chemistry, or a closely related field with a strong emphasis on polymer synthesis, design, and materials testing is required for this position.

Worthwhile Volunteering Opportunities

FACULTY, STAFF, and UNDERGADUATE, and GRADUATE STUDENT VOLUNTEERS ARE NEEDED FOR THE EVENTS LISTED BELOW.   

(1)   The Science Olympiad Regional Competition for high school students will be held at Georgia Tech on Saturday, February 21st.  CEISMC is sponsoring this event. Twelve teams, comprised of 15 students per team, from the metro Atlanta area have registered to participate in the competition.  Winners will progress to the state competition to be held at Emory University in March. We need volunteers to serve as Event Supervisors to conduct one of the 23 featured events (see the attached document that lists the activities by clusters).  Please note that the general categories of events are paper and pencil tests, inquiry activities that may involve rotating stations, and testing of devices that the teams have previously constructed and bring to the competition.  Event supervisors must be thoroughly familiar with the rules/guidelines that govern their respective events, and in some cases must generate test questions or activities, or the apparatus to test devices. The time commitment on the day of the competition would range from ~2-5 hours, depending on whether your event is offered more than once.  Competition will begin at 9:00 a.m. and conclude at  2:00 p.m., with an awards ceremony scheduled for 3:30 p.m.  Please contact Gustavia Evans at gustavia.evans@ceismc.gatech.edu for additional information.   

(2)   The STEM Mini-Conference, under the auspices of the Atlanta Science Festival, is being offered for the second year at Georgia Tech on Saturday, March 21st, from 8:30 a.m. - 1:00 p.m. CEISMC is sponsoring this event.  This year's event will be expanded to include high school teachers in addition to middle school teachers.  We need volunteers to provide a hands-on instructional session of 1.5 hours duration which will be offered twice.  We will focus on 6th grade Earth Science, 7th grade Life Science, 8th grade Physical Science, High School Biology, High School Chemistry, High School Physics and middle and high school mathematics.  Since this is a "STEM" event, mathematics, engineering, and technology applications should be integrated into the sessions when possible. (3)   The Science Department of Atlanta Public Schools will hold its annual District and Regional Science and Engineering Fair at Coretta Scott King High School located at 1190 Northwest Dr. NW Atlanta, GA. 30318.

The purpose of this fair is to permit students in grades three through twelve throughout the system an opportunity to present their original research projects in the annual District and Regional Science and Engineering Fair.

We are asking you to contribute your expertise and time as a judge on either of the following dates:

·   DISTRICT - Tuesday, January 27, 2015: Projects will be judged to determine the finalists in grades 3rd-5th.

·   REGIONAL - Wednesday, January 28, 2015: Projects will be judged to determine the semi-finalists in grades 6th – 8th (Junior Division) and 9th -12th (Senior Division).

·   REGIONAL RUN-OFF -Thursday, January 29th, 2015: Projects will be judged to determine the finalistsin the 6th – 8th (Junior Division) and 9th -12th (Senior Division) and the Gold Key Winners that will advance to the International Science and Engineering Fair. These projects will advance to the 67th Georgia Science and Engineering Fair held at the University of Georgia on Thursday, March 26th through Saturday, March 28th, 2015.

Innovation Infrastructure Workshop

The Institute for Materials invites you to attend an Innovation Infrastructure Workshop organized by Ken Gall, Professor for the School of Materials Science and Engineering. Ken will share his experiences in forming two start-up companies based on materials technologies and his expertise in utilizing campus resources for entrepreneurs. This is an interactive event! It will be a great opportunity to gain first-hand knowledge of transitioning research into the market so students are encouraged to attend, at no cost.

A postdoctoral position is available for an organic chemist to work on multi-step synthesis of mostly
nitrogenous small molecules on a multigram scale in the Drug Design and Synthesis Section, NIDA
Intramural Research Program, Rockville, MD. Our major research direction is the elucidation of the
structure and function of neurotransmitter systems in the mammalian central nervous system (CNS)
in normal, drug-altered, and pathological states and the molecular mechanism of action of CNS active
drugs. Organic/medicinal chemistry is the foundation of the multidisciplinary approach utilized in these
studies that requires the rational design and chemical synthesis of novel agonists, antagonists,
imaging agents, affinity ligands, and other drugs for particular applications.
Candidates must possess a Ph.D. degree and synthetic chemistry experience. Interest in the chemical synthesis of complex organic molecules, optical resolution of racemates, and crystallization, is required, as well as the desire to collaborate with colleagues in various pharmacological and other diverse scientific disciplines.

2015 Arnold O. Beckman Postdoctoral Fellows Program


The Arnold O. Beckman Postdoctoral Fellows Program is intended to support postdoctoral scholars with the highest potential for success in an independent academic career in chemistry and the life sciences, and to assist in their transition from “mentored yet independent” postdoctoral to an independent, tenure-track position. Nearly all successful academic careers in science at present begin with a postdoctoral period of additional training and development prior to the first tenure tract appointment. These individuals are expected to become the next generation of leaders and innovators in science, engineering, and technology.

The program requires the identification of both a candidate and an institutional mentor who will provide support the postdoctoral candidate throughout his or her fellowship.  Awarded fellows are required to spend full-time, 100% effort on the project outlined in the fellows application.

Candidate Eligibility
·        U.S. Citizen or permanent resident;
·        PhD, MD, and MD/PhD;
·        In a first postdoctoral position at the time of application; and
·        Have not been in said first postdoctoral position for longer than twelve months at the time of this application;
·        Will be eligible for a tenure track position at a scientific research institution at the end of year two of the fellowship.
   
Award
  • This is a 2 year award funded at a range of between $57,000 and $67,000, based on research experience, with 75% of the award going towards the stipend, and 25% towards research expenditures.

Embassy of France- Office for Science and Technology - PhD students seminar in France March 2015

The mission of the Office for Science and Technology (OST) of the Embassy of France in the United States is happy to announce the opening of the call of candidates for the program FADEx on Monday, October 13, 2014.
The program FADEx consists in a 2-days seminar between PhD students enrolled in a US university and PhD students enrolled in a French university. The seminar whose focus is on “advanced architecture for solar cells” will take place at Le Bourget-du-Lac, France, in partnership with the National Institute for Solar Energy (Institut National de l’Énergie Solaire or INES) in March 2015. This meeting will provide the opportunity for US and French PhD students to share scientific results in a very informal setting. Besides, four (4) lectures of well-known French researchers in the field will be also proposed to the PhD students. Additionally, the seminar will be followed by the visit of state-of-the-art French research centers – the INES, the MINATEC innovation campus, the Photovoltaic Institute of Paris Region (Institut Photovoltaïque d'ÃŽle-de-France or IPVF) – as well as a visit of the European Synchrotron Research Facility (ESRF).
Furthermore, thanks to the generous support of the OST, eight (8) scholarships to attend this meeting will be awarded to 8 top US PhD students. The scholarships covers the round trip to France, the trips within France, the accommodation and most of the meals.

Merck Post-Doc Opportunities

I hope this email finds you well.  I am writing to bring your attention to Merck’s Post-Doctoral Research Program.  The program, initiated in 2012 by Dr. Roger Perlmutter, Executive Vice President of Merck Research Labs, is intended to sponsor the continued academic development of exceptional young scientists from top academic institutions.  The values to the successful Post-Doctoral candidate are many, including:


 *   Ability to conduct academic research in a commercial environment
 *   Placement in unique laboratory environments  with top capabilities, equipment, expertise and knowledge

The program is 3 years in tenure with an annual review for contract renewal.

The Parenteral Product Development group, located in West Point PA, has been awarded the opportunity to sponsor a Post-Doctoral Researcher.  In this laboratory role, the researcher will work with highly cross-functional team to support the design and development of modified release non-oral formulations of small molecule or peptide pharmaceuticals, with a focus on biodegradable polymeric formulations (nano-/micro-particles and implants).

2015 Ford Foundation Fellowships-Deadlines Mid-November

The National Academies is accepting applications for the 2015 Ford Foundation Fellowships Programs for Achieving Excellence in College and University Teaching.  Full eligibility information and online applications are available on our website at: http://nationalacademies.org/ford
Eligibility Requirements:
  • U.S. citizens, nationals, permanent residents, or individuals granted deferred action status under the DACA program
  • Planning a career in teaching and research at the college or university level in a research-based filed of science, social science or humanities
Stipends and Allowances:
  • Predoctoral -- $24,000 per year for three years
  • Dissertation -- $25,000 for one year
  • Postdoctoral -- $45,000 for one year
Awardees have expenses paid to attend one Conference of Ford Fellows.
Approximately 60 predoctoral, 30 dissertation, and 18 postdoctoral fellowships sponsored by the Ford Foundation and administered by the National Research Council of the National Academies.

Liberal arts recruiting visit to GT

Faculty and administrators from Bates College, Dickinson College, and Williams College will be at Georgia Tech on the morning of October 27, 2014, to recruit potential faculty across a wide variety of disciplines from several metro-Atlanta area universities. These three institutions are part of a larger consortium of more than 20 liberal arts colleges (known as LADO: Liberal Arts Colleges with Diversity Officers) with an interest in recruiting talented new faculty. Across this consortium of schools, there were ~ 115 tenure track faculty openings last year, and there are ~125 tenure track openings currently being advertised for the 2015-16 academic year (along with roughly two dozen fellowship and post-doctoral opportunities). We encourage graduate students and post-docs, even if they are not yet on the job market, to attend. This is an opportunity to learn about careers at liberal arts colleges generally, and to get specific advice about how to prepare for the application process in advance as well as when you are actually ready to enter the job market.
