Teaching Opportunity: Alexander Academy

Position:

•   $30 an hour

•   1 day a week (Saturday or Sunday), 2-4 hours

•   August - November

•   1 week training session the first week of August

Instructors teach courses in pairs. This allows them to specialize in either the Math/Science or English sections of the test. Each pair of instructors teaches one or two classes a semester. Class are held at Georgia Tech and are typically on Saturday mornings 10:30-12:30 or Sunday afternoons 4-6. Instructors will be provided with course materials and a curriculum. 10-15 students per class on average.

Requirements

•   Strong scores on either the SAT or ACT

•   Communication skills, teaching experience

Alexander Academy started 3 years ago with just two teachers (Matt and Kevin) and a single class of 15 students. After five great semesters and 300+ students, the word is spreading about our courses. This year the company is expanding in a big way, adding 5-10 new instructors, working with schools like Pace and Lovett, and launching a new website in the Fall. CDC ORISE Fellowship Position

Fellowship Positions at the

Centers for Disease Control and Prevention

National Center for Environmental Health

Division of Laboratory Sciences

The Protein Biomarker- Lipid Reference Laboratory at the National Center for Environmental
Health, CDC is performing research in the areas of human biomonitoring and chronic disease
biomarkers. This research involves the development of analytical methods to measure
biomarkers such as steroid hormones, lipids, and trans-fatty acids, which have been linked with
chronic disease. Information obtained from this research will be used to determine the extent of
exposure in the population as well as to identify normal ranges for chronic disease biomarkers.
Findings will be used to help to identify population subgroups with increased exposure or risk,
and to assess possible associations between exposure, risk, and health effects.
The research involves activities such as sample preparation using automated equipment, analysis
of samples by mass spectrometry, data processing and analysis, and presentation of results. The
candidate will perform these tasks in compliance with CDC and CLIA policies and regulations,
which requires record keeping activities and performing administrative tasks.
This fellowship will provide the opportunity to obtain hands-on experience in human exposure
research as well as laboratory medicine, using state-of-the-art laboratory equipment and
procedures, working in a CLIA regulated environment, and in biomonitoring related public
health activities.
We are seeking candidates at the Ph.D., M.S., and B.S. levels with a degree in science (Minimum
GPA: 3.0) and experience in chemical and analytical laboratory work.
At the Doctoral level, the following skills are desired:
 The ability to conceive, organize and carry out basic and applied research directed
towards expanding scientific knowledge and understanding of human measurements of

This fellowship is administered by the Oak Ridge Institute for Science and Education (ORISE)

but may be renewed for up to four year. The participant will receive a monthly stipend
depending on educational level and experience and following the federal salary tables (GS
tables). The appointment is full-time at CDC in the Atlanta, Georgia, area. Participants do not
become employees of CDC or the program administrator, and there are no fringe benefits paid.

Purpose

The Neutron Sciences Directorate (NScD) at Oak Ridge National Laboratory (ORNL) invites applications for the position of Postdoctoral Research Associate in Neutron Scattering from Soft Opto-Electronic Materials. NScD operates the High Flux Isotope Reactor (HFIR), the United States' highest flux reactor based neutron source, and the Spallation Neutron Source (SNS), the world's most intense pulsed accelerator based neutron source. Together these facilities operate 24 instruments for neutron scattering research, each year carrying out in excess of 1,000 experiments in the physical, chemical, materials, biological and medical sciences for more than 3,000 visiting scientists. Major Duties/Responsibilities

The successful candidate will join a multi-disciplinary research team of soft matter scientists at ORNL and actively participate in the on-going research activities of the group, which primarily utilizes experimental techniques such as SANS and SAXS to investigate the microstructure of opto-electronic polymers and their self-assembly with block copolymer systems. The candidate will be encouraged to develop his/her own independent and collaborative research in this area by combining experimental data modeling and simulations. The post represents an excellent opportunity for an individual to develop his/her career and interact with leading scientists from around the world. This is a one-year assignment, renewable to a second year. Applicants should have a strong interest in understanding the fundamental interaction mechanisms in soft materials e.g. polymers, colloids, surfactants, and membranes by various computer simulation techniques. The successful candidate is expected to actively perform various laboratory experiments to characterize the materials of interests as well as performing neutron and x-ray scattering experiments. Data analysis of these experiments will require strong mathematical and computational modeling skills. It is expected that close collaborative relationships with other members of BSMD and the staff of the SNS and HFIR will be established.

Qualifications Required

* Ph.D. in Physics, Applied Physics, Nuclear Engineering, Chemistry, Chemical Engineering, Electrical Engineering, Materials

Science, Mechanical Engineering, or related science is required.

* Experience in soft matter science and expertise in laboratory experiments for material characterization, numerical data analysis, and modeling are required as evidenced by peer reviewed publications.

* Expertise in scattering theory is highly desirable, but not required.

* The candidate is expected to publish research results in scientific journals, maintain a strong commitment to the implementation and perpetuation of values and ethics and ensure compliance with environmental, safety, health and quality

program requirements.

* Strong written and oral communication skills and the desire to work in a team environment on scientifically challenging

problems are required.

Leadership Fellows Program--Application Deadline March 25th

The Leadership Education and Development Program Team is pleased to announce the official launch of the Leadership Fellows Program on March 1, 2013! 

What is the Leadership Fellows Program? The purpose of the Leadership Fellows Program is to enable Master's and Ph.D. students at Tech to serve as leadership coaches for Georgia Tech undergraduate students. Leadership Fellows will be professionally trained in leadership and coaching, earn a $3,000 stipend, and be expected to give three hours per week of time to the coaching process.

Fellows will sharpen and enhance their existing leadership and coaching skills by assisting in the development of undergraduates who are also eager to improve their leadership abilities. Fellows will also have the opportunity to learn from their peers at regular training sessions. In this environment Fellows will be able to actively reflect on their own previous leadership experiences and identify areas of improvement within themselves while coaching others. The reason for becoming a Leadership Fellow is quite simple: Develop yourself and develop others.

L'Oreal USA Fellowships For Women In Science

The L’Oréal USA Fellowships For Women In Science is a national program that annually recognizes five U.S.-based women postdoctoral researchers who are pursuing careers in the life and physical/material sciences, as well as mathematics, engineering and computer science.  

Since its inception in 2003, the L’Oréal USA Fellowships For Women In Science program has awarded 45 fellowships to women scientists across the U.S. Each year, the program attracts a number of talented applicants from diverse scientific fields, representing some of the nation’s leading academic institutions and laboratories. The Award selection process includes a two stage review process, including a first round review by an interdisciplinary panel of scientists and engineers and a distinguished jury of eminent scientists and engineers reviews the top applications and selects the L’Oréal USA Fellowships For Women In Science recipients.

The recipients of the L’Oréal USA Fellowships For Women in Science program participate in a week of events that include an awards ceremony, professional development workshops, media training and networking opportunities. In 2012, these workshops, which are facilitated by the program’s partner, American Association for the Advancement of Science (AAAS), will encompass job search techniques, interviewing skills, budget development for grant requests, and strategies for submissions to peer-reviewed publication.

Mission: The mission of the WLC is to inspire and prepare the women of Georgia Tech to become equal partners in the leadership of our professions, communities, and society.

History: The Women's Leadership Conference began during the winter of 1998 as means to celebrate, recognize, and learn more about the strong leadership exhibited by women of the Georgia Tech community. The conference is a gathering of women who have sought to become leaders in the classroom and the boardroom as well as the communities where they reside. As an infant coming into the world of annual campus activities, the conference was phenomenally successful. Now in its 14th year, the conference is again striving to expand its reach. This year we hope to use the conference theme Horizons to broaden the personal, professional, and global horizons of all conference attendees. The two-day conference offers workshops, speakers and discussions aimed at training female leaders on area campuses and in the Atlanta community. The 2012 conference will be particularly exciting, as this year celebrates the 60th Anniversary of the Matriculation of Women at Georgia Tech.

Date: This year's conference will take place Friday night November 2, 2012, and Saturday November 3, 2012. The location is the Student Center Ballroom on the Georgia Tech campus.

Theme: "Horizons". This year the committee came up with this theme to encourage the idea of women "broadening their horizons" and learning more about the world around them, whether it be on a personal level, a community level, or global level. We hope that the workshop and keynote speakers who will be speaking at this conference will bring some empowering lessons for conference attendees to carry with them into the world, whether they be related to business, health, Atlanta, well-being, volunteer efforts, issues related to human trafficking, or whatever your area of expertise.
