2015 Arnold O. Beckman Postdoctoral Fellows Program

The Arnold O. Beckman Postdoctoral Fellows Program is intended to support postdoctoral scholars with the highest potential for success in an independent academic career in chemistry and the life sciences, and to assist in their transition from “mentored yet independent” postdoctoral to an independent, tenure-track position. Nearly all successful academic careers in science at present begin with a postdoctoral period of additional training and development prior to the first tenure tract appointment. These individuals are expected to become the next generation of leaders and innovators in science, engineering, and technology.

The program requires the identification of both a candidate and an institutional mentor who will provide support the postdoctoral candidate throughout his or her fellowship.  Awarded fellows are required to spend full-time, 100% effort on the project outlined in the fellows application.

Candidate Eligibility

·        U.S. Citizen or permanent resident;

·        PhD, MD, and MD/PhD;

·        In a first postdoctoral position at the time of application; and

·        Have not been in said first postdoctoral position for longer than twelve months at the time of this application;

·        Will be eligible for a tenure track position at a scientific research institution at the end of year two of the fellowship.

   

Award

• This is a 2 year award funded at a range of between $57,000 and $67,000, based on research experience, with 75% of the award going towards the stipend, and 25% towards research expenditures.

2015 Ford Foundation Fellowships-Deadlines Mid-November

The National Academies is accepting applications for the 2015 Ford Foundation Fellowships Programs for Achieving Excellence in College and University Teaching.  Full eligibility information and online applications are available on our website at: http://nationalacademies.org/ford
Eligibility Requirements:

• U.S. citizens, nationals, permanent residents, or individuals granted deferred action status under the DACA program
• Planning a career in teaching and research at the college or university level in a research-based filed of science, social science or humanities

Stipends and Allowances:

• Predoctoral -- $24,000 per year for three years
• Dissertation -- $25,000 for one year
• Postdoctoral -- $45,000 for one year

Awardees have expenses paid to attend one Conference of Ford Fellows.
Approximately 60 predoctoral, 30 dissertation, and 18 postdoctoral fellowships sponsored by the Ford Foundation and administered by the National Research Council of the National Academies.

Dear Colleagues,

The Department of Energy’s (DOE) Office of Science is pleased to announce that the Office of Science Graduate Student Research (SCGSR) program is now accepting applications for the 2014 solicitation.  Applications are due 5:00pm ET on Wednesday September 24, 2014.

The SCGSR program supports supplemental awards to outstanding U.S. graduate students to conduct part of their graduate thesis research at a DOE national laboratory in collaboration with a DOE laboratory scientist for a period of 3 to 12 consecutive months—with the goal of preparing graduate students for scientific and technical careers critically important to the DOE Office of Science mission.

The SCGSR program is open to current Ph.D. students in qualified graduate programs at accredited U.S. academic institutions, who are conducting their graduate thesis research in targeted areas of importance to the DOE Office of Science. The research opportunity is expected to advance the graduate students’ overall doctoral thesis while providing access to the expertise, resources, and capabilities available at the DOE laboratories. The supplemental award provides for additional, incremental costs for living and travel expenses directly associated with conducting the SCGSR research project at the DOE host laboratory during the award period.

The Office of Science expects to make approximately 100 awards in 2014, for project periods beginning anytime between January and September 2015.

2014-2015 Fall Thermo Scientific Pierce Scholarship Award

Thermo Fisher Scientific is offering our future science scholars an opportunity to win $10,000 in scholarship funding for the 2014-2015 Fall semester. This scholarship was created to help provide educational opportunities for the future generation of scientists. Graduate students or undergraduate students must be enrolled in an accredited college for the 2014-2015 Fall semester to qualify for this scholarship. A pre-selected committee will award two $10,000 scholarships and four $5,000 scholarships among the candidates.

Scholarship Award Criteria:

• - Candidate must be enrolled as a graduate or undergraduate student at an accredited college or university for

• - Candidate must have a declared major of Biology, Chemistry, Biochemistry or a related life science field

National Research Council of the National Academies Fellowships

The National Research Council of the National Academies sponsors a number of awards for graduate, postdoctoral and senior researchers at participating federal laboratories and affiliated institutions.  These awards include generous stipends ranging from $42,000 - $80,000 per year for recent Ph.D. recipients, and higher for additional experience.  Graduate entry level stipends begin at $30,000.  These awards provide the opportunity for recipients to do independent research in some of the best-equipped and staffed laboratories in the U.S.  Research opportunities are open to U.S. citizens, permanent residents, and for some of the laboratories, foreign nationals.

Leadership Fellows Program--Application Deadline March 25th

The Leadership Education and Development Program Team is pleased to announce the official launch of the Leadership Fellows Program on March 1, 2013! 

What is the Leadership Fellows Program? The purpose of the Leadership Fellows Program is to enable Master's and Ph.D. students at Tech to serve as leadership coaches for Georgia Tech undergraduate students. Leadership Fellows will be professionally trained in leadership and coaching, earn a $3,000 stipend, and be expected to give three hours per week of time to the coaching process.

Fellows will sharpen and enhance their existing leadership and coaching skills by assisting in the development of undergraduates who are also eager to improve their leadership abilities. Fellows will also have the opportunity to learn from their peers at regular training sessions. In this environment Fellows will be able to actively reflect on their own previous leadership experiences and identify areas of improvement within themselves while coaching others. The reason for becoming a Leadership Fellow is quite simple: Develop yourself and develop others. 

Do you have a Master's or Ph.D student that would be interested in becoming a member of the inaugural class of the Georgia Tech Leadership Fellowship Program for the 2013-204 academic school year? UNCF/Merck Science Initiative

We are pleased to announce the 2013 competition for the UNCF/Merck Science Initiative Research Scholarships and Fellowships. Each scholarship/fellowship can be from $30,000 to $92,000. This continues the initiative which began in 1996 in support of science education and is sponsored by The Merck Company Foundation and Merck and administered by UNCF. This
commitment has been renewed through 2015.

The UNCF/Merck Science Initiative is dedicated to supporting the training of world-class African American biological and chemical scientists and engineers toward achieving the complementary goals of national economic competitiveness and social diversity. This initiative provides scholarships
and fellowships to at least 37 outstanding African American students per year- 15 at the undergraduate level, 12 at the graduate level and 10 at the postdoctoral level. In addition, the UNCF/Merck Science Initiative may provide grants to the science departments of the recipients'
home institution.

L'Oreal USA Fellowships For Women In Science

The L’Oréal USA Fellowships For Women In Science is a national program that annually recognizes five U.S.-based women postdoctoral researchers who are pursuing careers in the life and physical/material sciences, as well as mathematics, engineering and computer science.  

Since its inception in 2003, the L’Oréal USA Fellowships For Women In Science program has awarded 45 fellowships to women scientists across the U.S. Each year, the program attracts a number of talented applicants from diverse scientific fields, representing some of the nation’s leading academic institutions and laboratories. The Award selection process includes a two stage review process, including a first round review by an interdisciplinary panel of scientists and engineers and a distinguished jury of eminent scientists and engineers reviews the top applications and selects the L’Oréal USA Fellowships For Women In Science recipients.

The recipients of the L’Oréal USA Fellowships For Women in Science program participate in a week of events that include an awards ceremony, professional development workshops, media training and networking opportunities. In 2012, these workshops, which are facilitated by the program’s partner, American Association for the Advancement of Science (AAAS), will encompass job search techniques, interviewing skills, budget development for grant requests, and strategies for submissions to peer-reviewed publication.

The L'Oréal USA Fellowships For Women In Science awards five post-doctoral women scientists with grants of up to $60,000. 2013 KSTF Teaching Fellowships - seeking applicants

We are pleased to inform you that the Knowles Science Teaching Foundation is now accepting applications for the 2013 cohort of Science and Mathematics Teaching Fellows. The Knowles Science Teaching Foundation (KSTF) was created by Janet H. and C. Harry Knowles in 1999 to cultivate and support exemplary science and mathematics high school teachers and develop the next generation of leaders in education. If you know a student interested in pursuing a career in teaching mathematics or science at the high school level, please let them know about the KSTF Teaching Fellowship.

KSTF’s programs are designed to help reverse the current national trend that sees approximately half of all secondary teachers leave the field within five years. The total award for each Fellow is valued at nearly $175,000 over the course of the five-year Fellowship. Fellows receive tuition assistance while participating in a teacher credential program, monthly stipends, and grants for professional development and teaching materials. By empowering science and mathematics teachers to be effective in the classroom, KSTF helps deliver enriched educational experiences to students and, in the long run, ensures a stronger, healthier and more competitive nation.

The Women's Leadership Conference Nominations

Each year at the Women's Leadership Conference, Georgia Tech honors women who demonstrate exemplary leadership abilities. These are women who lead with heart, creating innovative solutions while inspiring and uplifting the entire Georgia Tech Community. The Women's Leadership Conference is seeking to honor a female leader who awakens the passion for success of those around her. She encompasses the ideals of a successful leader, radiating a demeanor that compels others to do the same.

In other words, we are looking to honor commendable female leaders who have been personally inspiring and will continue inspiring others with their story and their actions. Honoring such a woman at the Women's Leadership Conference 2012 would not only be an excellent way to reward an admirable leader, but would also encourage females at Georgia Tech to do the same - to follow their passion and to make a change.
