Worthwhile Volunteering Opportunities

FACULTY, STAFF, and UNDERGADUATE, and GRADUATE STUDENT VOLUNTEERS ARE NEEDED FOR THE EVENTS LISTED BELOW.   

(1)   The Science Olympiad Regional Competition for high school students will be held at Georgia Tech on Saturday, February 21st.  CEISMC is sponsoring this event. Twelve teams, comprised of 15 students per team, from the metro Atlanta area have registered to participate in the competition.  Winners will progress to the state competition to be held at Emory University in March. We need volunteers to serve as Event Supervisors to conduct one of the 23 featured events (see the attached document that lists the activities by clusters).  Please note that the general categories of events are paper and pencil tests, inquiry activities that may involve rotating stations, and testing of devices that the teams have previously constructed and bring to the competition.  Event supervisors must be thoroughly familiar with the rules/guidelines that govern their respective events, and in some cases must generate test questions or activities, or the apparatus to test devices. The time commitment on the day of the competition would range from ~2-5 hours, depending on whether your event is offered more than once.  Competition will begin at 9:00 a.m. and conclude at  2:00 p.m., with an awards ceremony scheduled for 3:30 p.m.  Please contact Gustavia Evans at gustavia.evans@ceismc.gatech.edu for additional information.   

(2)   The STEM Mini-Conference, under the auspices of the Atlanta Science Festival, is being offered for the second year at Georgia Tech on Saturday, March 21st, from 8:30 a.m. - 1:00 p.m. CEISMC is sponsoring this event.  This year's event will be expanded to include high school teachers in addition to middle school teachers.  We need volunteers to provide a hands-on instructional session of 1.5 hours duration which will be offered twice.  We will focus on 6th grade Earth Science, 7th grade Life Science, 8th grade Physical Science, High School Biology, High School Chemistry, High School Physics and middle and high school mathematics.  Since this is a "STEM" event, mathematics, engineering, and technology applications should be integrated into the sessions when possible. (3)   The Science Department of Atlanta Public Schools will hold its annual District and Regional Science and Engineering Fair at Coretta Scott King High School located at 1190 Northwest Dr. NW Atlanta, GA. 30318.

The purpose of this fair is to permit students in grades three through twelve throughout the system an opportunity to present their original research projects in the annual District and Regional Science and Engineering Fair.

We are asking you to contribute your expertise and time as a judge on either of the following dates:

·   DISTRICT - Tuesday, January 27, 2015: Projects will be judged to determine the finalists in grades 3^rd-5^th.

·   REGIONAL - Wednesday, January 28, 2015: Projects will be judged to determine the semi-finalists in grades 6^th – 8^th (Junior Division) and 9^th -12^th (Senior Division).

·   REGIONAL RUN-OFF -Thursday, January 29^th, 2015: Projects will be judged to determine the finalistsin the 6^th – 8^th (Junior Division) and 9^th -12^th (Senior Division) and the Gold Key Winners that will advance to the International Science and Engineering Fair. These projects will advance to the 67^th Georgia Science and Engineering Fair held at the University of Georgia on Thursday, March 26^th through Saturday, March 28^th, 2015.

2015 GT Student Day at the Capitol: Tuesday, January 13th

On Tuesday, January 13, the Student Government Association, in partnership with the Office of Government and Community Relations, will host its annual Georgia Tech Student Day at the Capitol and is inviting all students to join.  At this event, students will learn more about what happens under the gold dome and can thank state leaders for their commitment to higher education.

Students who attend will have the opportunity to:

·         Interact with elected officials and senior staff members

·         Thank legislators for their support

·         Take a tour of the Capitol and witness legislature session

·         Participate in a group photo with Georgia Tech leadership and legislators

·         Show that decisions affecting Georgia Tech matter to students

Innovation Infrastructure Workshop

The Institute for Materials invites you to attend an Innovation Infrastructure Workshop organized by Ken Gall, Professor for the School of Materials Science and Engineering. Ken will share his experiences in forming two start-up companies based on materials technologies and his expertise in utilizing campus resources for entrepreneurs. This is an interactive event! It will be a great opportunity to gain first-hand knowledge of transitioning research into the market so students are encouraged to attend, at no cost.

The workshop will be held Tuesday, December 2 at 9 a.m. at the Georgia Tech Global Learning Center, Room 235. We will adjourn at 12:30 p.m. for lunch in the GLC Atrium. Breakfast, coffee, and refreshments will be served during the workshop.

Embassy of France- Office for Science and Technology - PhD students seminar in France March 2015

The mission of the Office for Science and Technology (OST) of the Embassy of France in the United States is happy to announce the opening of the call of candidates for the program FADEx on Monday, October 13, 2014.

The program FADEx consists in a 2-days seminar between PhD students enrolled in a US university and PhD students enrolled in a French university. The seminar whose focus is on “advanced architecture for solar cells” will take place at Le Bourget-du-Lac, France, in partnership with the National Institute for Solar Energy (Institut National de l’Énergie Solaire or INES) in March 2015. This meeting will provide the opportunity for US and French PhD students to share scientific results in a very informal setting. Besides, four (4) lectures of well-known French researchers in the field will be also proposed to the PhD students. Additionally, the seminar will be followed by the visit of state-of-the-art French research centers – the INES, the MINATEC innovation campus, the Photovoltaic Institute of Paris Region (Institut Photovoltaïque d'Île-de-France or IPVF) – as well as a visit of the European Synchrotron Research Facility (ESRF).

Furthermore, thanks to the generous support of the OST, eight (8) scholarships to attend this meeting will be awarded to 8 top US PhD students. The scholarships covers the round trip to France, the trips within France, the accommodation and most of the meals.

Liberal arts recruiting visit to GT

Faculty and administrators from Bates College, Dickinson College, and Williams College will be at Georgia Tech on the morning of October 27, 2014, to recruit potential faculty across a wide variety of disciplines from several metro-Atlanta area universities. These three institutions are part of a larger consortium of more than 20 liberal arts colleges (known as LADO: Liberal Arts Colleges with Diversity Officers) with an interest in recruiting talented new faculty. Across this consortium of schools, there were ~ 115 tenure track faculty openings last year, and there are ~125 tenure track openings currently being advertised for the 2015-16 academic year (along with roughly two dozen fellowship and post-doctoral opportunities). We encourage graduate students and post-docs, even if they are not yet on the job market, to attend. This is an opportunity to learn about careers at liberal arts colleges generally, and to get specific advice about how to prepare for the application process in advance as well as when you are actually ready to enter the job market.

This is a great opportunity for your students to submit their research efforts at a conference designed exclusively for Graduate Students, and is an excellent opportunity for us to show off the stars of your programs.  Research efforts can be in progress.  Theoretical and practical work submitted for consideration may include, but is not limited to, research papers, poster presentations, thesis and dissertation work, case study evaluations, panel presentations of a research topic, and business plans/models. 

This year we will be presenting Best Paper, Best Oral Presentation (Panels), and Best Poster Presentation awards at the end of the conference.  The student who wins in each category will win a monetary award of $250 and an award letter.

Leadership Fellows Program--Application Deadline March 25th

The Leadership Education and Development Program Team is pleased to announce the official launch of the Leadership Fellows Program on March 1, 2013! 

What is the Leadership Fellows Program? The purpose of the Leadership Fellows Program is to enable Master's and Ph.D. students at Tech to serve as leadership coaches for Georgia Tech undergraduate students. Leadership Fellows will be professionally trained in leadership and coaching, earn a $3,000 stipend, and be expected to give three hours per week of time to the coaching process.

Fellows will sharpen and enhance their existing leadership and coaching skills by assisting in the development of undergraduates who are also eager to improve their leadership abilities. Fellows will also have the opportunity to learn from their peers at regular training sessions. In this environment Fellows will be able to actively reflect on their own previous leadership experiences and identify areas of improvement within themselves while coaching others. The reason for becoming a Leadership Fellow is quite simple: Develop yourself and develop others. 

Do you have a Master's or Ph.D student that would be interested in becoming a member of the inaugural class of the Georgia Tech Leadership Fellowship Program for the 2013-204 academic school year? If so, we will be conducting two information sessions on March 7th and March 12th. Since we are offering a FREE lunch, we are asking all attendees to register for the event. SpaceUp Atlanta is a space unconference, where participants decide the topics, schedule, and structure of the event. Unconferences have been held about technology, science, transit, and even cupcakes, but this is the first one focused on space exploration, science, STEM and anything about space.
