Science Writing Internships

Light Knowledge Resources (www.light-kr.com), an Internet publishing company based in Princeton, NJ, is seeking talented students who are interested in internships in science writing. The internships are for our two health-news websites, The Myeloma Beacon (www.myelomabeacon.com) and The MDS Beacon (www.mdsbeacon.com).

These unpaid internships provide valuable experience in learning how to write technical science content in a manner that is friendly and understandable to lay readers. In our case, articles are geared toward patients suffering from medical conditions and their families.

These internships are excellent experience for applicants pursuing health care-related careers or careers in health- or science-related writing/journalism.

Students will develop and write content for Light's health-related websites. This involves reading the literature, writing articles, and publishing to the sites.

Interns will work in 7-10 member teams responsible for writing, updating, and editing content for their site.  Hours of work are flexible, and interns can work from home or school.  Articles for the websites will be 500-700 words in length, and interns will be expected to spend 7-10 hours per week for more than a single semester.

Applicants should have excellent writing skills, an interest in science, be able to work independently, and possess a history of strong academic performance (3.4 GPA minimum).  Applicants also will need access to a computer with Internet access. Relevant experience is desired, but all enthusiastic applicants are encouraged to apply.

Project Description:

A project is available in the Division of Laboratory Sciences, within the National Center for Environmental Health (NCEH), at the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention in Atlanta, Georgia.  The fellow will assist in the determination of human exposure to environmental chemicals, chemical threat agents and toxins using analytical techniques, such as solid phase extraction, liquid chromatography and mass spectrometry. Activities may include:

·         Sample preparation, sample analysis, data processing, instrument operation, method development and troubleshooting. 

·         Documentation and communication of experimental results, issues, and development progress.

·         Participation in emergency response exercises, proficiency testing and method validation.

This fellowship is part of the Research Participation Program for CDC, which is administered by the Oak Ridge Institute for Science and Education.  The participant will receive a monthly stipend depending on education level and experience. The initial appointment will be for up to one year and may be renewed upon recommendation of CDC and subject to availability of funds. Participants do not become employees of CDC or the program administrator, and there are no fringe benefits paid.  The appointment is at the CDC in the Atlanta, Georgia area. Qualifications:

·         The applicant should have earned a Bachelor’s, Master’s, or PhD degree in chemistry or a related science within the past 5 years.

·         Must be a US citizen.

·         Experience in analytical chemistry is beneficial.

·         Experience with mass spectrometry and/or liquid chromatography is highly desired.

Planetary Classes offered in Fall 2012

Planetary Seminar--We anticipate maintaining a high proportion of exciting external speakers (in addition to sampling the range of planetary research conducted by local scientists and engineers).  This "course" meets only one hour per week, and students need only attend and occasionally ask questions to earn credit.

The Department of Chemistry in the College of Science and Mathematics invites nominations and applications for the position of Visiting Assistant Professor in Chemistry. Georgia Southern University (www.georgiasouthern.edu), a member institution of the University System of Georgia and a Carnegie Doctoral/Research University, is one of Georgia’s premier universities.  The nearly 700-acre park-like campus is located in Statesboro, a classic Main Street community near historic Savannah and Hilton Head Island.

Within this setting, the Department of Chemistry offers a modern chemistry program leading to B.S. and B.A degrees certified by the American Chemical Society.  With over 500 chemistry majors, the Department ranks in the top 25 producers of ACS-certified B.S. chemistry majors nationwide.  This position will contribute in student-centered classroom and broad-based laboratory instruction for our students.

Position Description. Reporting to the Chemistry Department Chair, the Visiting Assistant Professor requires teaching responsibilities as well as an MS or PhD in Chemistry.  The Visiting Assistant Professor in Chemistry will be responsible for a workload of 18 hours per semester in teaching core chemistry courses for majors and non-majors and other duties as specified by the Chemistry Department Chair.  The position is a 9-month, non-tenure track appointment, and the salary is competitive and commensurate with qualifications and experience.  The faculty member will be appointed to an annual contract.

Required Qualifications:

Applicants must hold an earned M.S. or Ph.D. in Chemistry with a minimum of 18 hours of chemistry graduate education by the starting date.  Evidence of a commitment to teaching; ability to teach undergraduate chemistry courses and laboratories; ability to work with diverse populations; and effective communication skills in spoken and written English are also required. 

Preferred Qualifications:

            A minimum of 2 years of college/university teaching.
